The first step is to choose and purchase your seeds or plants. For those who live in a cold climate, it may be hard to find plants during the fall and winter, so you may have to start from seed.  If possible, try to purchase the plants instead of the seed because you will be able to enjoy your herbs right away.

Choose a container, such as the Rose Bud Fiberglass Planter, that will hold all of your herbs and has good drainage. The container you use should have drainage holes at the bottom and be clean because your herbs won’t grow well when the roots are soggy. Also, make sure that the container has enough space for your plants to grow bigger because your plants shouldn’t be cramped in. For a sophisticated look, use three planters in different sizes and coordinated colors.  Using more than one will also allow you to separate your herbs for more character and convenience.

Next, use a potting soil that is rich in nutrients, such as Miracle Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix. Make sure that the soil is damp to allow the roots to quickly soak up the soil’s nutrients and keep them healthy. Pour the soil in the container and place your plants in the soil. Remove some of the soil from the original container and loosen up the roots to help them grow better in the new container. If you are planting seeds instead of plants, pour most of the soil in the container first and save enough soil to lightly cover the top of the seeds. Read the directions on the seed packet to see how far apart you should plant the seeds and if there are any other recommendations. You won’t need to use all of the seeds in the packet at once, so be careful when planting them. If you have too many plants in the pot, it will lead to an overcrowded container that is not good for growing herbs.

Fertilize your plants on a regular basis. An easy fertilizer to use is the Miracle Gro Indoor Plant Spikes. Just insert a spike into the soil and the spike will automatically release the fertilizer into the soil.
