1. Add some koi, goldfish, or minnows to your pond. These fish will eat mosquito eggs and larvae, preventing adult mosquitoes from hatching.

2. Some areas that mosquitoes favor in ponds are areas of shallow water, such as the water that sits in top of algae. Getting rid of algae can be a huge step in the direction of preventing mosquitoes from laying eggs in your pond. If you have plants that are growing on the edge of your pond, keep them trimmed so that they do not sit in your pond. Leaves can gather a thin layer of water, which is an ideal spot for mosquitoes to lay eggs.

3. Ponds are generally stagnant, especially if you do not have any fountains or bubblers in them to get the water moving. Thismakes it easy for eggs to be laid. Getting a fountain or bubbler will ensure that water is continually cycling, and therefore continually moving. No matter what size pond you have, a fountain or bubbler can be a major help for mosquito control.

4. Purchase mosquito “dunks” or “plunks” that can be placed directly in your pond. Mosquito Plunks – 0.2 oz / 24 pack work to kill mosquito larvae in up to 50 square feet of water. If your pond is larger, you can use more plunks. The Mosquito Plunks – 0.2 oz / 24 pack will work for 2 weeks, before you will have to drop more into your pond. It is non toxic to your fish or aquatic animals. There are “dunks,” known as Mosquito Dunks, which float on your pond and gradually release pesticide that works to kill any mosquito larvae that are in your pond. One dunk of the Mosquito Dunks can be used in 100 square feet of water, and will last for a month.

5. You can also use a mosquito controlling product around your pond area. I like Dr. T’s Mosquito Repelling Granules 5 lbs formula, pictured above. You can apply it to anywhere in your yard, but you should concentrate to areas near your pond. Dr. T’s Mosquito Repelling Granules 5 lbs can be applied just like fertilizer. It is not dangerous to use around pets or people.

Mosquitoes are an annoying insect that are capable of transmitting the West Nile Virus and easily breed in pools of water. A pond can quickly become a breeding ground for mosquitoes to flourish if precautionary measures are not taken. In order to avoid having a breeding ground for mosquitoes, it is important for pond owners to take the following steps:

1. Add a fountain to your pond. Mosquitoes do not like to breed in slow, stagnant water and to avoid this problem, it is a good idea to add a fountain to your pond. The fountain will help to circulate the water quickly, which will make it difficult for the mosquitoes to breed.

2. Add a pesticide to your pond water to help kill mosquito larvae before they become adults and breed more mosquitoes. There are a variety of effective products available, such as Mosquito Bits – Kill Mosquito Larvae Quick that are specifically designed for use in ponds and water garden. This pesticide works well in ponds or any type of standing water and works fast to kill mosquito larvae.

3. Spray your yard for mosquitoes. Use a pesticide spray or fogger in your yard to quickly kill adult mosquitoes and prevent them from laying eggs in your pond. With fewer mosquitoes in your yard, your pond will be less likely to become a breeding ground. If you still notice a problem with mosquitoes, you may also want to use a ground pesticide.

4. Apply a mosquito pesticide all over your yard and specifically, in the area where your pond is located, for extra protection against mosquitoes. Mosquito And Gnat Scat Granules by Dr. T’s Nature Products is an effective and safe way to treat mosquitoes on the ground.
