Unfortunately, moles are frequent visitors of my yard. I have done a lot of research about how to get rid of them in the most effective way. If you are having trouble with moles or voles, listen up!

An easy way to get rid of these critters has to do with mulch. Moles love to burrow in mulch, with the goal of either nesting or scavenging for food. One way to prevent moles from becoming permanent residents of your yard is to reduce the amount of mulch you have. It would be ideal to remove the mulch around the plants that moles love to eat.

You could also build a barrier around your garden or wherever moles like to visit. The best material would be chicken wire or poultry netting. Not only do you need to set up this barrier above ground, but you also need to sink it under ground. As you may realize, moles like to dig, and they are perfectly capable of digging underneath a barrier if it is not sunk deep enough into the ground. You also have to make sure that the holes of the barrier are not large enough for the critters to squeeze through.

One of my favorite tricks is to use a “liquid fence” material, like the Liquid Fence Mole Repellent Gallon Concentrate, pictured to the right. The liquid in the Liquid Fence Mole Repellent Gallon Concentrate seeps into the ground wherever you apply it, and is easily absorbed by favorite food sources of moles: earthworms and roots! Moles will not eat anything that has the Liquid Fence Mole Repellent Gallon Concentrate in it, which will force the moles to flee your yard! The best part is that this solution is safe to use around kids and pets.

Another way to get rid of moles is to use sonic pulses to drive them away. The Mole & Gopher Sonic Spikes 2 Pack has 2 spikes which emit sonic pulses. You will sink these spikes into soil around areas where you are having mole problems. Together these 2 spikes can cover an area of about 15,000 square feet. The pulses from the Mole & Gopher Sonic Spikes 2 Pack will get rid of moles/voles/gophers for at least 4 months.

All of the methods mentioned are non lethal methods of getting rid of moles and voles. If you have exhausted all non lethal options, then its time to turn to mole killers. The Victor Mole Trap is a standard mole trap that is pushed into the ground, and will cause instant death of the mole when it is set off. If you have children or pets, you must be extremely cautious when using the Victor Mole Trap.

Mole Day is celebrated annually on October 23 from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m. Mole Day commemorates Avogadro’s Number (6.02 x 10^23), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry. It was created as a way to foster interest in chemistry and schools throughout the United States and around the world celebrate Mole Day with various activities related to chemistry and/or moles.

My youngest daughter was working diligently on her Mole Day project last night, so naturally my thoughts went to the critters digging trenches in my backyard.

How much of the earth’s surface would be covered in trenches if a Mole of Moles spent the summer burrowing? I don’t know – but since Avogadro’s number is 6.022 x 10**23 – it would most likely be most of the earth and then some.

Getting back to those backyard varmits – there are a number of ways to rid your yard from Moles and Gophers – it all depends on whether you want to kill them, trap the moles or repel the moles. Picture to the right is Sweeneys Mole Repellent which is highly acclaimed in many circles. Sweeney’s also makes poison peanuts to bring an untimely death to the rodents.

Happy Mole Day to all – maybe … today we just let the Moles and Voles live in peace. We can get them tomorrow.

Rodent-proofing, requires strong materials of which rodents may not be able to gnaw through, such as concrete, sheet metal or hardware cloth. Pictured to the right is a selection of hardware cloth that we sell in our shop and online.

Also important in controlling rodents is eliminating food sources. People are often surprised to find out that food that had long been forgotten may be the source of food for the invading rodents.

The bird seed up in the attic or in the garage or a box of food which fell down behind a shelf somewhere. It is important to find these. Garbage should be placed in containers that rats cannot get into.

We put together a rodenticide comparison chart for you to review before purchasing a means to get rid of your mice and rats in a DIY way. We hope it is helpful. It outlines the popular brands of rodenticides like Hawk and Tomcat – indicating the differences between the brands.

Researchers believe that the mole is a loner. On several occasions two or even three moles have been trapped at the same spot, but that does not necessarily mean they had been living together in a particular burrow.

Networks of runways made independently occasionally join otherwise separate burrows.

Because of their food requirements, moles must cover a larger amount of area than do most animals that live underground. The home range of a male mole is thought to be almost 20 times that of a male plains pocket gopher. Three to five moles per acre (7 to 12 per ha) is considered a high population for most areas in the Great Plains.

Trap attractively finished with rust resistant coating. Must be used with caution around children, & family pets. Cover the trap with a bucket to prevent tampering.

Moles are pesky underground animals that dug tunnels throughout the soil and can really tear up your lawn. There are a variety of ways to rid your lawn of moles and you may need to try a variety of methods for getting rid of moles.

The simplest way to help get rid of moles is to apply a mole killer all over your lawn. A great mole repellent to use is Dr. T’s Mole Out Granules. This easy-to-use mole repellent may be directly sprinkled on your lawn and effectively works to kill moles and is safe for use around children, pets and gardens.

Moles like to feed on grubs in the soil and removing their food source helps to reduce the amount of moles under your lawn. Using a grub killer, such as Spectracide Grub Stop Once & Done!, on your lawn is also effective at ridding your lawn of moles. Once moles have lost their food source, they are likely to move to another area.

Using a mole trap is an effective way to deal with a stubborn mole. The Victor Mole Trap is designed to instantly kill the mole, but should be covered by a bucket to prevent injury to pets and children.

Whatever treatment that you decide to use, getting rid of moles can be a difficult task and may require some effort. Check out Backyard Styles for more ways to treat mole problems.

Background on the Varmit – The Garden Mole

There are at least 5 genera of Moles in the United States. The most common is the eastern or garden mole. This pesty mammal has a pointed snout, rudimentary eyes, soft velvety fur, broad feet and of course long powerful claws on it’s front pair of legs. Moles are a pest around the home and garden because moles dig tunnels just below the surface of the ground – ruining your lawn and garden. Mole molestation must stop (parden the play on words)

Total Elimination of Moles – Victor Mole Traps

If you can stomach dead moles – these will do the job – perfectly – use them as follows.

1. To identify active mole tunnels, flatten out all tunnels. Wait 24 hours. Tunnels that resurface are most likely the active tunnels. Set traps in these locations.

2. Make a depression in the roof of the main tunnel by pressing down with your thumb.

3. Center the trap on the tunnel, with the trap pan directly over the depression you’ve made with your thumb.

4. Push trap down until spears have bottomed out.

5. Preset spear holes by plunging spears up and down until they travel easily to the bottom on their own.

6. Before setting the trap, make sure the firing latch is OUTSIDE the pan.

7. Holding the trap frame in place, rapidly pull upward on T handle until the firing latch snaps over the pan. Ease T handle down until latch catches.

8. Trap is set. If necessary, apply slight downward force to ensure pan is fitting IN the thumb depression and is contacting the roof of the tunnel.

9. Trap has fired. Remove dead mole.

This Victor® mole trap is equipped with a safety pin to eliminate false firings. Spring is the best time to trap moles because newly-made surface tunnels are easy to spot. However, moles can be trapped during any season except in very cold or dry weather

The Motomco Mole Killer (shaped like worms) is our favorite. Motomco MOLE KILLER is a breakthrough mole elimination product in the battle against moles. Developed and tested on live, captured moles, MOLE KIILER is the only mole bait scientifically proven to kill moles. It is EPA-approved for use by homeowners on lawns and gardens that are infested with moles.

MOLE KILLER works where grain bait mole killers, mole repellents and a myriad of mole elimination home remedies have failed. Shaped like an earthworm, the mole’s natural food choice, MOLE KILLER so closely resembles the earthworm in size, shape and feel that a mole devours it the same way – grabbing the bait quickly with its large forepaws and ingesting it quickly.

Mole Molestation Elimination!
