Used and recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture as well as major U.S. zoos, parks, campgrounds, resorts and school districts

Clear plastic tube allows the user to see the yellowjacket “body count”

What kills the insects

Once inside the trap, the yellowjackets cannot fly out and die of dehydration.

Where it’s used

The RESCUE!® Reusable Yellowjacket Trap can be used outdoors wherever there is a yellowjacket problem. We recommend the trap be placed at least 20 feet away from an outdoor activity area, such as a patio or deck. The trap should be hung, if possible, in a natural setting of bushes and trees. It’s also effective to place the trap on the perimeter of a yard or area where yellowjackets are entering. The trap should also be placed at least 20 feet away from a known yellowjacket nest.

When it’s used

The RESCUE!® Yellowjacket Trap can be used in spring when the queen yellowjackets emerge from overwintering to look for nest sites. It can also be used in the summer and fall when the worker yellowjackets forage for food.

The leaves are used to make citronella oil. When the grass is 2.5 – 3 months old it is cut above the leaf sheath. The leaves are left to wilt in the sun. It can then be harvested again after about a month and a half.

Fresh, partly dried or wholly dried grass is steam distilled to remove the essential oil. The oil is yellow-brown and has the aroma we are all familiar with. Citronella oil is used a lot in candles and repellents in the US.

When the weather gets warmer, ants can make their first appearance in your home. Ants can get into small cracks or opening in the exterior of your home and can make your home a permanent residence by building an ant colony. Getting rid of ants after the colony is built is not an easy task. To help avoid having to deal with this difficult problem, it is best to take preventative measures before you see an ant roam around in your home. Use an ant pesticide around the outside perimeter of your home to help keep ants away and discourage them from getting into your home. Here are some effective products that repel and kill ants:

Use a home barrier pesticide like Amdro Ant Block around the exterior of your home to prevent ants from trying to get in. This ant barrier is highly effective and acts as a bait for the worker ants to take back to the colony. It is formulated to kill the entire the ant colony and is effective at killing 15 different types of ants.

Another effective ant barrier treatment for your home is the Ant Killer Granules by Bonide. This ant barrier consists of granules that may be sprinkled around the exterior of your home. It not only kills ants, but also fleas, crickets, ticks, and chinch bugs.

For the turf around your home, use the Ant, Flea, & Tick Killer Granules by Bonide to keep them away from your home. This pesticide is in granule form and may be used in a garden spreader for easy application. It may also be applied to your home’s foundation to help prevent ants from trying to get into the cracks and also is effective at killing ants in ant hills. After application, lightly water the granules to activate the pesticide and help it to spread.

A simple way to get rid of mice in your house is set up mouse traps around the area you suspect the mouse or mice are staying. It is best to set up several mouse traps around your house and use a bait like peanut butter or cheese. It is best not to use a poison to kill the mouse or mice when trapping a mouse in your house because the mouse could die somewhere inside your house making it hard to locate or remove. Here are some great products to use when trapping a mouse:

The Victor Metal Pedal Rat Trap is a classic and simple way to trap any mouse in your house. Start off by using several traps in the area where the mouse has been spotted. Use peanut butter, cheese, or another type of food that is attractive to mice. Check on the traps on a regular basis to see if the mouse has been caught and dispose of the mouse right away.

Another easy-to-use mouse trap is the Victor Electronic Mouse Trap. This mouse trap uses no poisons and can kill up to 50 mice. Just put some peanut butter in the back to attract mice and check on the trap periodically. So easy and no mess!

To prevent mouse from returning to your house, use the Heavy Duty Sonic PestChaser. This device emits a high-pitch frequency that mice hate to hear and will avoid. It is inaudible to humans and has a red light display to let you know that it is working. No messy chemicals and very effective!

Researchers believe that the mole is a loner. On several occasions two or even three moles have been trapped at the same spot, but that does not necessarily mean they had been living together in a particular burrow.

Networks of runways made independently occasionally join otherwise separate burrows.

Because of their food requirements, moles must cover a larger amount of area than do most animals that live underground. The home range of a male mole is thought to be almost 20 times that of a male plains pocket gopher. Three to five moles per acre (7 to 12 per ha) is considered a high population for most areas in the Great Plains.

One of the most common insects to invade your home are ants. Ants will find a way into your home regardless of the temperature outdoors. For treating ants indoors, use a spray like the Victor Poison-Free Ant & Roach Killer 17.5 oz Aerosol. This spray has a pleasant scent and is safe for use in areas that are used by children and pets. It is a good idea to find out where your ants are coming into your home and spray this ant killer in that area first. This spray is designed to be toxic for ants and should be sprayed on the surface of your ant’s source of entry until it is wet to be effective. The fresh mint smell will leave the area smelling great without a pesticide smell.

Spiders can also be a big problem in your home during the fall and winter because they are seeking a warm, dark place to set up their web. Use a spider killer like the Terro Spider Killer 16 oz. to create a barrier in your home to help prevent spiders from coming inside and reproducing.  This formula is ideal for quickly killing spiders and helps to reduce the amount of spiders inside your home. Use this spray around the perimeter of your basement to help create a barrier that spiders won’t be able to get through.

For flying insects in your home during the fall and winter, the Poison-Free Flying Insect Killer 17.5 oz by Victor is great for killing moths, gnats, flies, and mosquitoes that get into your home for warmth. This spray may be used in the areas that children and pets use and is very effective at killing flying insects.

Keeping insects out of your home in the fall and winter can be a challenge, but with the right insect control you will quickly see results. For more products to keep the insects out of your home, check out BackyardStyle.

This prompted me to find a good household insect control product that could be used safely around children and pets.

Bonide Household Insect Control is intended to be used in and around residences and their immediate surroundings such as (but not limited to): apartments, atriums, attics, automobiles, basements, bathrooms, boats, cabins, campers, carports, cat sleeping quarters, clothes storage, condominiums, decks, dens, driveways, garages, gazebos, homes, kitchens, lanais, living rooms, parlors, patios, pet sleeping areas, play rooms, porches, recreational vehicles, rooms, solariums, storage areas, sun rooms, utility rooms and verandahs. This product is not to be used in commercial food handling areas.

We think that she was bit by a brown recluse spider that was brought back in luggage from a vacation in the southwest – but since the insect was not found, we cannot be sure what it was.

It is a good time of the year to be aware of insects in the home, because many are trying to find shelter from the cold. Bonide’s established product can be used for the following:

Ants: Spray around ant trails, doors and windows and other places where ants enter the house.

Carpenter Ants: For control, locate and treat nests and surrounding areas. Apply around doors, windows and other places where ants enter premises and where they crawl and hide. Spray into infested wood through existing openings.

Fleas on Surfaces: Remove pet bedding and destroy or clean thoroughly. Spray pet resting quarters. Adult fleas and larvae contacted by spray will be killed. Put fresh bedding down once spray has dried. Do not spray animals directly. For best results, pet should be treated with an appropriate flea control product registered for use on pets before allowing them to return to the treated area. Spray rugs and carpets where infestations are bad. Delicate fabrics should be tested for staining in an inconspicuous area prior to use.

Spiders: Apply along and behind baseboards, to window and doorframes, corners, pipes, storage localities, attics, crawl spaces and other areas over which these pests may crawl.

Centipedes, Ground Beetles, Pillbugs, Sowbugs, and Scorpions: Apply around doors and windows and other places where these pests may enter premises. Treat baseboards, storage areas and other locations where these pests are found.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry area. Disposal: Do not reuse empty container. Wrap container with several layers of newspaper and discard in trash.

Moles are pesky underground animals that dug tunnels throughout the soil and can really tear up your lawn. There are a variety of ways to rid your lawn of moles and you may need to try a variety of methods for getting rid of moles.

The simplest way to help get rid of moles is to apply a mole killer all over your lawn. A great mole repellent to use is Dr. T’s Mole Out Granules. This easy-to-use mole repellent may be directly sprinkled on your lawn and effectively works to kill moles and is safe for use around children, pets and gardens.

Moles like to feed on grubs in the soil and removing their food source helps to reduce the amount of moles under your lawn. Using a grub killer, such as Spectracide Grub Stop Once & Done!, on your lawn is also effective at ridding your lawn of moles. Once moles have lost their food source, they are likely to move to another area.

Using a mole trap is an effective way to deal with a stubborn mole. The Victor Mole Trap is designed to instantly kill the mole, but should be covered by a bucket to prevent injury to pets and children.

Whatever treatment that you decide to use, getting rid of moles can be a difficult task and may require some effort. Check out Backyard Styles for more ways to treat mole problems.

If the garden is larger than about 20 feet wide, the fence should be at least 8 feet tall. Deer can jump shorter fences if they have enough room to land on the other side.

Motion-activated startle machines
The Scarecrow™ — This motion-activated sprinkler attaches to the garden hose. Place it in the area to be protected and it sprays the deer with a stream of water.

When deer investigate, they receive a small electric shock. The deer learn to avoid them, so you’ll need to keep moving the units, but they’re easy to move. Powered by two AA batteries, the shock is humane but strong enough to startle the hungry deer.

Taste and scent deer repellents are liquid and they are either broadcast in small devices attached to the plants or mixed with water and sprayed on the foliage.

If you plan on having a graduation party, birthday party or a wedding outdoors this summer, don’t forget to provide your guests protection from yellow jacket attacks. Your guests will be very grateful if they don’t have to fight or run from yellow jackets at your party. Yellow jackets can be terribly annoying and frightful when they are attracted to the food or guests at your party. They can attack repeatedly and their sting is very painful.

If you can’t or don’t want to bring the party inside, it is a good idea to be proactive with yellow jacket prevention. In order to keep yellow jackets away from your guests and food, it is a great idea to set up yellow jacket traps to keep them at bay. Place these traps all around your yard to help attract and kill them. It is a good idea to place the traps in areas that are not too close to people and food in a tree or on a post.

One highly effective and convenient-to-use trap is the Rescue Yellow Jacket Trap. This trap already contains bait for attracting yellow jackets, so there is no mess. The attractant lasts for weeks and the trap are easy to set up in your yard. Just hang the ready-to-use traps up around your yard to control all types of yellow jackets. Yellow jackets will get trapped in the bag and die.

Another yellow jacket trap that you may want to consider is the Deluxe Yellow Jacket Trap. This trap should be hung up at least six feet above the ground in an area away from people and food. A special feature of this refillable trap is that it does not use any pesticide to trap yellow jackets. Just place food or a sweet liquid inside the trap for an attractant and yellow jackets will be attracted to the bait and get trapped inside. Use this trap year after year for great protection against yellow jackets.

Having fun outdoors should not involve the fear of getting stung by a yellow jacket. Taking proactive measures and using a trap can be very effective for preventing scary attacks and painful stings. Check out these products and more at Backyard Style.
