In my experience, I find that getting fish is one of the main reasons people create a backyard pond or water garden in the first place! However, you can not get too eager and fill your pond with too many fish. It can have a negative impact on the health of your pond water, because excess fish waste can lead to algae. Adding too many fish can also lead to poor fish health. So you know you know you are not overcrowding your pond, you should only add one Goldfish for every 5 gallons of water. I do not recommend adding Koi fish because they like to eat your plants.

Now lets talk about feeding your fish. Many people do not realize this, but fish can actually survive on the natural foods in the water. However, many people (myself included) enjoy feeding fish. I feel like it keeps me connected with my pond. Just be sure to never overfeed your fish, as they will produce too much waste which leads to algae. A good rule of thumb is to only feed your fish once a day, and only give them as much food as that they can eat in 5 minutes. The type of food you want to feed your fish is up to you! There are plenty of options. For my goldfish I use Multi-Mix Gold Pond Fish Food 1-Liter. If you have either goldfish, Koi, or both, you can use Gold/Koi Floating Food Pellets. Neither of these food formulas will make your water cloudy. You can buy the Gold/Koi Floating Food Pellets in small, medium, or large pellets, depending on the size of your fish!

The temperature of the water plays a huge part in the timing of feeding your fish. If you do not want to fuss with remembering when to feed your fish, I would recommend you get the Fish Feedometer for Ponds, pictured above. This device floats on the top of your pond and takes the water’s temperature. When the temperature is above 50 degrees, it is safe to feed your fish, and the light on top of the device will turn green. When the temperature is not appropriate for feeding your fish, the light will turn red. The Fish Feedometer for Ponds really takes the guess work out of feeding your fish!
