Now is the time to take advantage of the hummingbird’s migration to the north this month. Establishing a habitat now for these little “jewels” is important for keeping them around all season long. To establish a habitat early in the season, it is recommended that you set-up bright red hummingbird feeders with sweet nectar around your yard in order to attract these beautiful birds.

One of my favorite, new feeders for feeding hummingbirds up close is the Jewel Box window mount feeder by Aspects. This feeder allows you to easily view hummingbirds right outside your window. Place outside your living room or kitchen window for comfortable viewing. Perfect for enjoying all of their beautiful colored feathers and gives you a close, rare glimpse at these magnificent birds.

This clever little feeder has three feed ports, holds eight ounces of nectar and has an ant moat for keeping ants and other crawling insects away. Always keep the feeder clean and change the nectar on a regular basis. Easy to clean and fill with nectar, this charming window feeder allows you to easily enjoy the hummingbirds up close all season long!

For this lovely hummingbird feeder and more, including pre-mixed nectar, take at look at Backyard Style. There are so many great hummingbird feeders to choose!

Hummingbirds are one of the most beautiful and fascinating birds in North American and soon they will start migrating north looking for a great place to make a home. Now is the perfect time to be thinking about and planning for your spectacular Hummingbird sanctuary. Although it does take a little bit of work to care for your backyard hummingbirds, it is well worth the effort and helps to maintain a healthy and stable habitat for these birds.

There are some things that you need to do to set up the ideal home for hummingbirds and one of the most important items is to choose is a great feeder. Hummingbirds always require clean and brightly colored feeders. The main color that they are attracted to is red. Always make sure that your feeder or feeders are clean, in great condition and have the color red on them. If your feeder does not have any red on it and is clear, use red colored syrup to attract hummingbirds to it.

Hummingbird feeders are available in a wide variety of styles, shapes and colors. This is one area in your sanctuary where you can become very creative and have fun with. Feeders range from hand blown glass ornaments to colored plastic saucers. It’s good to try a variety of feeders in your yard to see what works best for you and the hummingbirds. You may want to try a single hummingbird feeder or one that feeds multiple birds at one time. Also, you may want a feeder with an art guard or moat to prevent ants from getting to your feeder. These are all things to consider when choosing a feeder. Backyard Style has a great selection of feeders to choose from with various prices and styles.

Feeding your backyard hummingbirds is an easy thing to do. Hummingbirds love a sugar nectar mixture that you may purchase pre-made. It is available in a ready-to-use mixture, a powder form or a concentrated liquid. The pre-made nectar is inexpensive and ideal for quick and easy filling of the feeder. It is available in clear or red, depending on the type of feeder that you have. Just make sure your feeder is clean before refilling.

Feeders should be placed in an area with plants and foliage that is known for attracting hummingbirds. The type of plants that you use will depend on the area that you live in, so it is best to do some research when planning out where to place your feeder and where to plant flowers and greenery.

Once you have successfully attracted hummingbirds, you will be able to enjoy their beauty and uniqueness, while helping to better their world!

Celebration of Hummingbirds in North America is not just about the beauty of this tiny bird. The Ruby Throated Hummingbird is theorized to play an important role in cross-fertilization of plants and flowers.

As the Ruby Throated Hummingbird searches among flowers for a sip of nectar, it serves as an important pollinator of plants throughout its range.

It is not clear whether some plants may actually be dependent on the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds for cross-fertilization, but there are some that are heavily visited by hummingbirds during prime pollination season. There is on-going study regarding this that still needs to be completed.

Ruby Throated Hummingbirds are also predators; they prey upon myriad tiny insects that serve as the main source of protein in their diets.

Along with nectar and pollen, hummingbirds eat flies, ants, bees, and beetles–all of which are quite small. If a hummingbird is sitting on a perch and repeatedly flies out a short distance and returns to the perch, it is probably “gnat-catching”–even if the human observer is unable to see the miniscule insects it is catching.

Hummingbirds are the most beautiful birds in the world as far as I am concerned and the Ruby-throated hummingbird is the one that most of us are familiar with in most parts of the United States.

Before I start talking about how to attract them .. there are a few facts to keep in mind that will bring to light the “whys” behind my suggestions.

Hummingbirds have a long tongue that laps up liquids like a dog or cat would, just at a much faster rate. That is how the hummingbird gets the nectar out of your feeder!

The most commonly seen U.S. hummingbirds and their general areas of distribution are:

Allen’s Hummingbirds in Coastal California

Anna’s Hummingbirds in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico and West Texas

Black-Chinned Hummingbirds in Western U.S. generally west of Texas to Wyoming

Blue-Throated Hummingbirds in Southwestern Arizona

Broad-Billed Hummingbirds in S.W. Texas, S.W. New Mexico and S.E. Arizona

Broad-Tailed hummingbirds in Parts of the Rocky Mountain regions, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, Colorado and mountains of Central California

Buff-Bellied hummingbirds in Rio Grande valley of South Texas

Calliope hummingbirds in Montana, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, E. California

Costa’s in S. California, southwest Arizona, southern New Mexico, western Texas
Ruby-Throated hummingbirds in Easter United States from Central Texas to N. Dakota

Rufous hummingbirds in northwest United States to coastal regions of S. Alaska

Violet-Crowned hummingbirds in Southern California and West Texas

White-Eared hummingbirds in south Arizona and West Texas

To attract hummingbirds, make sure that you plant lots of native hummingbird flowers and flowering shrubs and trees. The brighter the flowers, the better.

Place at least one hummingbird feeder that will help will draw and keep hummingbirds in your backyard. Hummingbirds have a great “GPS” system (not necessarily Magellan .. but you know what we mean). Once they feed in your yard, they will keep coming back.

To attract more hummingbirds initially, try tying a pink, red or orange ribbon in a few places to draw the hummingbirds to your backyard. Remember to change your nectar frequently (once or twice per week) to keep it fresh.
