Keep Your Pond Fish Healthy in the Winter with a Pond De-Icer

Share |

If you have fish in your pond during the winter, it is important to check on the condition of your pond periodically throughout the winter.  When checking on your pond, make sure that the pond heater is working properly and is maintaining an air hole in the pond to help release the harmful gases that can build up when the water is frozen on the top.  Since your pond fish will go into hibernation mode during the winter, it is not necessary to feed them.

If your pond does not have a pond de-icer, choose one that will work well in your climate zone.  In most colder climates, the pond heater only needs to be able to keep a hole open in the ice for the fish.  If you live in a climate where the winter is more mild, the pond heater should be able to keep the water from freezing over.

The Laguna Aeration Kit  is designed to supply your pond with a constant supply of oxygen to help keep the fish healthy. The air pump stays out of the water, which makes it easy to install and check on.  To help keep the surface of your pond warmer, use a pond heater like the Powerheat 500 Watt Pond De-Icer.  This durable pond heater is ideal for helping keep a hole in the water to allow the gases to exchange.  Another easy to use pond de-icer is the Floating Winter Pond De-Icerby Danner Pond.  Just place this pond de-icer in the pond and it will keep a hole open in the pond regardless of the temperature.

Keeping your pond fish healthy during the winter is easy with a pond de-icer.  After installing your pond de-icer, check on it periodically to make sure that it is properly working and creating an air hole for the fish.
