Fall Tree Planting Tips for Every Gardener

Share |

Although the spring is the preferred planting season for trees in most parts of the country, the fall can be a great time to plant a tree in your yard, especially if you live in a warm, humid climate.  The fall is a great time to plant or transplant a tree in your yard because the roots are likely to grow more easily in cooler temperatures.  Trees may be planted in the fall as long as they have a chance to grow their roots before the ground becomes too cold.

  • To plant young trees in your yard, determine the best location for your tree. It is a good idea to pick a location that will allow your tree enough room to grow properly.  Get some information regarding the full-grown size of your tree before you start planting.  You may also want to determine where your sewer line or septic tank is located to avoid having future problems with the tree roots growing into the plumbing.
  • Once you have chosen the right location for your tree, it is time to start digging the hole.  Use a shovel like the Eagle Round Point Shovel With 47-Inch Wood Handle to easily pierce the ground and dig up the dirt.  It is recommended that you dig a hole that is at least twice as wide as the rootball.  When digging the hole, make sure that the rootball is only a few inches from the top of the soil, so it can retain all of the essential nutrients it needs from the top of the soil.
  • After the hole has been dug to the appropriate width and depth, place the tree in the hole and make sure that it is placed at the previous level it was planted at.  Use a nutriet rich soil, such as the Schultz Garden Soil for Trees and Shrubs, to fill in the hole and stabilize the tree.
  • Once you have stabilized the tree with soil, use a hose to thoroughly soak your planting to help get rid of air pockets and help the roots to grow.   The Swan Soaker Garden Hose is ideal for providing your newly planted trees with lots of water.  To help keep your tree moisturized when not watering with a hose, place mulch around the basin to help retain water near the top of the soil.
  • Lastly add a stake if needed.  You tree may need extra support from a tree stake.  Use a tree stake, like the DeWitt Tree Stake Kit, to properly support your young trees.
