Calculating your pond’s water volume can be a daunting task to many pond owners. By using a simple calculation and conversion, most ponds’ volume can be easily estimated. Every cubic foot of space in a pond is occupied by 7.5 gallons of H2O (water).
A pond’s water volume can be calculated by multiplying its total volume (in cubic feet) by 7.5 gal/ft3. This is SUPER easy if you have a perfectly square pond, but not every pond has a shape whose volume is easily calculated. Below we show calculations for determining the volume of a few common pond shapes that pondkeepers may have.
Rectangle or Square Shaped Ponds
Multiply the length of the pond by the width to find the area. Multiply the area by the AVERAGE depth and then by 7.5 to find the volume.
Oval Shaped Ponds
Multiply one-half the length by one-half the width of the pond and then multiply that by 3.14 to find the area. Multiply the area by the AVERAGE depth and then by 7.5 to find the volume.
Circle Shaped Ponds
Multiply the radius by itself and then multiply that by 3.14 to find the area. Multiply the area by the AVERAGE depth and then by 7.5 to find the volume.

Break irregular shapes into simpler shapes. In the case of a figure 8, calculate the area of the two circles. Add these areas and multiply the total area by the AVERAGE depth and then by 7.5 to find the volume.
