Just add seeds and water to the tray of 72 Jiffy pellets, plug it in, and watch the growth begin! A heating pad and protective dome keep this greenhouse at the ideal temperature for seed germination and seedling growth. However high-tech the equipment might be, seeds still need the basic ingredients for successful germination- moisture, oxygen and warmth. The closer these three factors are to the optimum for the seed type being germinated, the better the result. Many germination failures are caused by one of these factors being neglected. Fortunately, with hydroponic production, seeds are not left to take their chances out in the soil where the elements may play havoc with the germination process. With protected cultivation we can control moisture, temperature and oxygen levels with a number of means. We also can limit the chance of pest and pathogen attack on the vulnerable young seedlings. For this reason, a small amount spent in some propagation equipment is one of the best investments a hydroponic grower can make to ensure success and healthy seedlings. Creating the optimum environment for seed germination relies on some simple principles. In the past, clever gardeners have utilized warm window sills, indoor heaters, and outdoor hot boxes and other proven places to germinate early seedlings. These days, hydroponic growers want to grow year-round. Many are based in climates with freezing winters and hot summers and want to propagate from seed on a regular basis. Others grow entirely indoors and need to consider light for seedlings. -------------- Labels: Indoor Gardening Monday, December 24, 2007 Merry Christmas from Backyard Style!- CLICK HERE!![]() Christmas Eve is definitely here and Christmas Day will soon be upon us. The nights (in the midwest) are crisp and cold and everyone is turning on the pond heaters, birdbath heaters and lighting the fire pits. As the song goes, "It's the most wonderful time of the year." Our concern is that we all make it through the cold holiday season safely. To that end and to help you stay safe, we have some suggestions.
I recently read a study that stated birds who had assistance in the winter doubled their chances of survival. If you already have an existing BIRD BATH, without heat source, heat can easily be added with a corded BIRD BATH HEATING ELEMENT . Look for bird bath heaters that are UL tested and have safety features such as hooks or clamps that secure the heater to avoid having it knocked out of the bird bath. No sooner I open the car door, the deer gracefully flees for cover. The weird part of this is that I live only 30 minutes outside of Detroit! I love the beauty of the deer and needed to find a product that could keep the deer out of places like the garbage, garden, garage, deck etc.. without making them flee miles away. I truly like to have them near to witness thier beauty. Enter Liquid Fence for Deer and Rabbits. In addition to keeping the deer out of the places that you wish them to stay out of, Liquid Fence for deers is safe for your plants and family and environmentally safe and biodegradable to boot. Now - my number one deer and rabbit repellent is available in a "Just Pump & Spray version Combo Pack." It is a sturdy, refillable, easy-pump, 48 ounce pressure sprayer and 6 ounces of Liquid Fence® Deer & Rabbit Repellent concentrate, enough to make a generous 3 quarts of guaranteed effective repellent, all in one pack. The simple up and down pumping action of the pressure sprayer makes it so easy to apply all natural Liquid Fence Liquid Fence Deer Repellent is also long lasting and rain resistant. As us Michiganders understand, rain can stop the effectiveness of repellents - but not the Liquid Fence brand. If you are looking for a more electronic version of a deer repellent - or a more localized (garden-only let's say) version - tryout the Havahart Electronic Repellent for Deer: Happy Deer Repelling and have a Merry Christmas. Robot Lawn Mower - Robomow RL-850 - Middle-Range Robotic Mower
Robotic lawn mowers come with a two year warranty One of the most important advantages for the Robomow is that it is environmentally friendly. Government studies have shown that a gasoline powered lawn mower can belch out more emissions than a typical SUV. No emissions on this little robot guy. "This Robomow grass cutting robot is probably the most exciting thing that has happened on our street for a while! It saves money, it works, it's a topic of conversation and it's fun - the perfect Christmas gift" - Anonymous."Happy Roboting and Happy Holidays! Solar Powered Christmas Lights - Here is a quick post that outlines the coolest product that I have seen on the market this Christmas.
(When you click on the link, scroll to the bottom of the page to find the coupon for 10% off) With the all-new Solar-powered decorating lights there is no outlet needed! Decorate anywhere without dangerous extension cords or need for an outlet. These lights will save you tons of money in the long run. The sun charges strings of 60 lights by day. The lights turn on automatically at dusk and run for about eight hours! No energy cost! These are a great idea for decorating near a road, around a mailbox or lampost or other unique areas. Now you're not limited to a nearby outlet. 26' length. Normal non-solar powered Christmas tree lights left on for 10 hours a day over the 12 days of Christmas (maybe more days of Christmas is actually closer to the truth) will produce enough carbon dioxide to inflate 12 balloons. NO KIDDING - so choose a more eco friendly solar powered solution, and turn the other ones off when no one's in the house! The total power consumption from Christmas lights is five times the entire energy output of the sun since the beginning of time - I have heard. I doubt the validity of this claim - but you get the point. Save money and energy by using SOLAR! -- Labels: Solar Powered Christmas lights Wednesday, December 5, 2007 Pine Tree Farms Birdie Wreath Wild Bird Food- CLICK HERE!
At the very time food becomes hard to get, cold weather increases the calorie requirements of birds. You can provide wild birds the nutrition they need at this time by offering seed mixes with a high fat and energy content, and offering suet, cakes of high-energy fat blended with seeds and nuts.
The Pine Tree Farms Birdie Wreath Wild Bird Food provides a great source of high energy to your backyard birds, which have a very high metabolism need in the winter. Seed cakes are a great alternative to loose seed feeding and may be used to attract a wide variety of birds or a select few. Suet is beef fat, a high-energy food critical for birds’ survival in the colder months. Suet is an especially strong magnet for birds (including this Red-breasted Nuthatch) that eat lots of bugs in the warmer months. This seed cake doubles as its own wreath-shaped feeder and it is small enough that several may be hung to establish multiple feeding zones. The convenience and size of the Birdie Wreath make it an ideal way to offer your birds a high-energy supplement. The Birdie Wreath Wild Bird Food is developed for year-round feeding and consists of the finest seeds and nuts. This seed cake may be hung. Birds that enjoy this seed cake: blackbirds, cardinals, chickadees, crows, doves, finches, flickers, goldfinches, grackles, grosbeaks, jays, juncos, mockingbirds, nuthatches, redpolls, siskins, sparrows, starlings, titmice, towhees, woodpeckers, and wrens Ingredients: black oil sunflower seed, peanuts, safflower, red millet, gelatin A suet feeder is any wire-mesh cage or bag, such as an onion bag, which holds suet or suet mixture. Suet cages that are only open at the bottom tend to be starling-resistent but allow woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees to feed by clinging upside down. Suet also can be tied to trees or smeared into knotholes. Labels: Pine Tree Farms Suet Outdoor Cooking Gifts for the Avid Backyards-Man- CLICK HERE!
